Since this week the new feeder with the feed auger hangs in the run and is connected to the site. After the test run at home came the installation, and it has been running since.
Automatic feeding
In this phase the feeder feeds by itself: the server triggers feedings spread over the day on a schedule, within opening hours. You can watch live as the hens run to the feeding spot. The button for visitors is still off. The reason is the same as at launch: first the feeder should show for a few weeks that it delivers every portion reliably before strangers trigger it. Every feeding goes into the log, with time, duration and result.
30 seconds per feeding
The stream runs around the clock through a small buffer on the server that only ever keeps the last few minutes. When grain falls, the server cuts the seconds before and after out as a clip: 30 seconds, with the run-up, the feeding and the scramble afterwards. A whole day is never recorded, only these moments.
The daily highlights
Every evening the server puts the day's clips together into one video: a short intro with the day number, the feedings one after the other, a small overlay with the time, a closing sequence at the end. The video comes in landscape for YouTube and in portrait for the short formats. The last feeding of the day is usually missing, because it often falls into the night-vision picture and then you only see grey hens.
The day count for the videos starts today, with day 1.
